Midmar Dam in the Umgeni River, with a capacity of 235 million cubic metres, lies 20 km north-west of Pietermaritzburg. It is situated next to the N3 near Howick, about 100km north-west of Durban, KZN Province of South Africa. The Midmar Dam provides water to KZN Midlands all the way to the outskirts of Durban The dam is a popular watersport and angling venue and the indigenous KZN yellow fish can be caught there. An annual event is the famous Midmar Mile that draws thousands of swimmers from all over South Africa and is reputed to be the largest open water swimming event in the world.

From Durban, take the N3 north for about 100 km. Take the turn-off onto the R103. The entrance to the dam is on the west.
