“The name Asrivier was derived from an event during the Great Trek about 1838 when a broken axle on one of the wagons, caused the Eastern Freestate contingent of the Trek, to be considerably delayed. I can remember swimming and camping there during my formative years (Late 1940s) and hearing the tale of the “Gebreekte wa-as gedurende die Groot Trek”. It would appear that the name was later incorrectly translated into “Ash” instead of “Axle”. ” - Chris Smit, 2016/05/30

“The tunnel from the Katse dam in Lesotho, discharges water at this point. The velocity energy is reduced by first a deeper and then wider section of flow. The water then flows along the Ash river into the Sol Plaatjies dam just south of Bethlehem. From there it flows along the Liebenbergsvlei River into the Wilge River and then into the Vaal Dam near Vereeniging. (1 Feb 2013)” - Chris Smit, 2013/02/01
