Umkomaas, on the banks of the Mkomazi River, lies. 50 kms south of Durban on the KZN coast of South Africa. The Aliwal Shoal in the Indian Ocean, lies 5kms East, off the village of Umkomaas. In 1849, a 3 mast vessel called the 'Aliwal' under the command of Captain James Anderson almost collided with the shoal, giving the shoal its now famous name. It is rated by Jacques Cousteau as one of the top ten dive sites in the world, being the jewel of the KZN south coast. This shoal is rich in marine and plant life. Depths very from 6 to 27 meters and visibility is normally good. The Cathedral area of the reef is one of the more spectacular dives. Its inhabitants include the Ragged Tooth Shark, Loggerhead Turtle and Ribbon Tailed Rays. Some divers who regularly dive Aliwal say the dive is second only to the boat ride through the breaking surf to get to the shoal, some divers use up all their air on the ride out.
