Bishopstowe is 10km east of Pietermaritzburg, and marks the start of the Amble Arts and Craft. Pietermaritzburg is the capital of the Kwazulu-Natal province, with approximately 937 594 inhabitants. Pieter+maritz+burg was named after Pieter Retief and Gerrit Maritz. Close to Pietermaritzburg is the Natal Midlands, with plentiful water, farmland, towns, a wonderful arts and crafts route, rivers, lakes, dams and waterfalls, green pastures, hills and forests, the Drakensberg, the Midlands Meander, Howick Falls, Albert Falls Dam Nature Reserve and the Kamberg Nature Reserve. Go for hiking, visit the coffee shops, art galleries, guest houses, cheese farms, trout farms, and even potters, weavers and painters.
