In the ninth Frontier War King Mgolombane Sandile, chief of the Ngqika tribe, was mortally wounded whilst bravely defending his land against British invasion on 29 May 1878, and buried at this grave on 9 June 1878. He was buried with a British soldier on either side of him, in order to convince followers that his spirit would not roam.
