Philip and his laborers started digging the tunnel in 1843 and within little more than a year, they had completed a tunnel of 228m long. It has been declared a national monument and with a commemoration plaque. The tunnel is no longer in use.

“We traveled to the tunnel on 11 Oct.The access road and portal are very badly overgrown and there is not much to see of the tunnel. As we appeared to be on private ground (Mooirivier Farm) we elected not to disturb anything. Beautiful area.” - Chris Smit, 2015/10/14
