An isolated stand alone tower of rock with an interesting history. There was a story that the local King Faku threw traitors and enemy down the cliffs in such numbers that the Umngazi River flowed red with their blood. Thus when early white settlers and the first cartographers heard this story they assumed Mlengana Rock was the site of the executions. They promptly named it Execution Rock. And the name has stuck.
When one sees this rock yourself it doesn’t take long to figure out that it would have been an impossible task to scale those vertical cliffs with prisoners in tow. The real Execution Rock does exist, but it is some distance down the valley, close to a bend in the Umngazi River and only about 30m high. www.MountainPassesSouthAfrica.co.za
