There are 3 trails to choose from, the total distance being 45km, and taking about 5 hours to complete. Trails are suitable for 4X2 vehicles with diff lock, suitable for a soft roader (a vehicle without low range), low range gears are required to complete the trails, a guide must accompany drivers, quad bikes are welcome, camping facilities and covered accommodation is available, as well as conference facilities. Surrounds: With three great trails to choose from, you'll want to set aside at least a weekend to really experience this area properly. If you are pushed for time, though, let Mark DeVenney know - some of the routes can be shortened and/ or linked to cater for busy itineraries. All the routes are guided, and delightful picnic lunches are available from Weavers Nest on request. En route:1. Wakkerstroom Heights 4x2 Trail This vehicle-friendly trail can either be done as a morning's warm-up (before joining up with one of the tougher 4x4-only routes), or extended to become a full day's outing. For many the highlight of the trail is the precipitous 2,4-km drop from the lip of the escarpment. 2. Wandersheim 4x4 Trail: Also starting at Luneburg, the Wandersheim trail is probably the most serious route in the area and gets a solid four grading. 3. Rooibok 4x4 Trail: Starting near Amersfoort, this scenic trail explores the rolling hills and grasslands to the north-west of Wakkerstroom. Most of the trail is relatively easy with a couple of challenging sections. Bookings should be made directly through the owner, Yuri Wessels, on Tel (017) 730 0390. Luxurious self-catering and fully catered accommodation at the Weavers Nest Country Lodge just outside Wakkerstroom. Those who would rather pitch a tent should inquire about the different camping options on the 4x4 routes. World-famous bird watching in and around Wakkerstroom. Also, hiking trails, horse riding, mountain biking and wing shooting in season. For the adventure junkies there are abseiling, paragliding and survivor courses. Fly-fishermen should ask about the organised river fishing safaris, offering five indigenous species as well as trout. (Information supplied by DriveOut Magazine).
