The 366ha reserve was proclaimed in 1973 and offers visitors hiking trails traversing past water pools and the opportunity to view the old lighthouse and various fauna. The 9km Roseate Tern hiking trail has views over beaches, dune vegetation, rocky outcrops, a 1851 lighthouse and an old military observation post. Birdwatching is also popular in this reserve, with a bird hide on the Roseate trail. Entrance permit are obtained at the Pine Lodge Holiday Resort located at the entrance to the Cape Recife Nature Reserve for the visitors entering with vehicles. However visitors to SAMREC, a marine bird rehabilitation and education centre is free of charge, when there is proof of visit is produced. (Updated Apr-12).
