Martello Tower (1837 - Fort Beaufort) is a military garrison and unique inland tower. In South Africa there are only two Martello's besides the one in Simonstown and that makes it of historical significance. Due to its inland location the tower was never used during war but there is a historical building, the Fort Beaufort Military Museum which displays a collection of relics dating from clashes between the Xhosas and the Settlers. To date the Tower is a national monument. For more information contact the Fort Beaufort Historical museum. .
