For centuries a large cluster of Modjadji cycads (Encephalartos transvenosus), which grows high in the Lobedu Mountains, were protected by the fabled successive rain queens, the matriarchal leaders of the Lobedu dynasty. These specimens grow 10 - 13 m high and bear cones that may weigh up to 34 kg between December and February. Today visitors to the Modjadji Cycad Reserve can visit the Royal Kraal and in spring attend the Rain Making festivals. Nature lovers can enjoy 12km of well-constructed walks through the ancient cycad forest and have a picnic or barbeque at the picnic area. Facilities include a cycad nursery, information centre and kiosk. Permits must be obtained at the entrance to the reserve. (Apr 2021)
