“During the time of King Mswati II, in 1864, a band of Swazi raiders launched an assault on the Mapulana who had fled to a site on the Blyde River. The Mapulana moved into a previously selected mountain stronghold where many massive rocks had been gathered for just such an emergency. During a misty night, the Zwazi attempted a surprise attack on the Mapulana, but were beaten off by a barrage of rocks, released from the top. The depleted and demoralised Swazi raiders were forced to retreat. In fear of retribution from their king, they settled in other parts of the Lowveld. The battle of Mariepskop was given the name Moholoholo, which means “the great battle”.” - Chris Smit, 2024/06/08
