Spar's alcoholic outlets are known as Tops and can be found across the country. Sale of alcohol is prohibited on Sundays in South Africa, except in restaurants, and on wine farms. The grocery chain store concept emerged in the 1960's, and during this time, 8 wholesalers were given the exclusive rights to the SPAR name, and to service 500 small retailers. Spar is found in 3 sizes: SPAR for neighbourhood shopping, SUPERSPAR for one-stop, competitively priced, bulk shopping and KWIKSPAR for every day convenience. The SPAR Group Ltd operates 6 distribution centres, which supply goods and services to about 800 SPAR stores in South Africa.
