Formerly known as 'Pienaars Rivier Dam' since 1956 when it was constructed. The dam is situated just 22km from Pretoria was formerly just a source of water to the landowners but in 1977, it was established as a Nature reserve. This section of the dam on the Southern part has been dedicated for birdlife and wildlife. This is a bird haven paradise with over 250 species of birds, on the banks of the Roodeplaat dam are two bird hides and a wildlife. An entrance fee is charged to enter the reserve section.
