A Gravel pit is an open cast working for extraction of gravel, which is often found in river valleys where the water table is high, from which they can then naturally fill with water and form ponds or lakes. Old, abandoned gravel pits are frequently used as nature reserves, or for water sports, camping and walking, and even in some case, explosive ordinance disposal. 'simunye' is a Zulu word, meaning 'We are one', and the town is home to the Royal Leopards F.C, Swaziland's ruling football champions.
