Wakkerstroom have been designated a protected reserve. A rich birdlife destination such that a training Centre was set up by Bird Life South Africa to train bird guides from the local community and also monitor threatened bird species around South Africa. The reserve is rich to three major bird habitat types, namely wetlands, grasslands and forests. For more information contact the Wakkerstroom Tourism Association.
