Mafeteng is a city located in Lesotho and serves as the capital of the Mafeteng district. It is situated approximately 76 kilometers to the south of the nation's capital. The border town in South Africa adjacent to Mafeteng is Wepener. The town is believed to be named after an early visitor, Emile Roland, who was affectionately referred to as "Lefeta," which translates to "traveller" or "passer-by." In English, Mafeteng means "The place of the passers-by." Over time, Mafeteng has developed into a bustling trading hub that historically functioned as a significant staging area during wartime. “Mafeteng is a small village in Lesotho about 26 km S/E of Wepener (OFS) . The name means ‘place of crossing’, refering to a point where the track crossed the Caledon River.” - Chris Smit, 2024/09/26
