Semonkong means 'place of smoke' in English and dates back to the 1880s as a refuge for Basotho villagers who were displaced by the conflict during the Gun War. Situated in the middle of mountains the town is reachable by 4WD, yet it attracts a wide range of visitors due to various adventurous activities such as hiking, abseiling and waterfalls. The town has a few accommodation options, stores and plenty of pubs. The town is reachable by bus or taxis and only 120km from Maseru. For more information the visitors can contact Lesotho Tourism main office in Maseru.
