OSHAKATI IS NAMIBIA’S SECOND LARGEST CITY (though town might be a better description) and is also the capital of the far northern region. The town is focused on transborder trade with Angola; indeed, in the Ovambo language, its name means ‘that which is between’. But just to keep things interesting, others believe the name refers to the broadcast tower in downtown which, at 275m, is the tallest freestanding structure in the country.

The town shares an airstrip with nearby Ondangwa and was also a South African Defence Force base during the Namibian War of Independence, also known as the South African Border War or Angolan Bush War. Officially founded in 1966, Oshakati has experienced rapid development since Namibia’s independence in 1990. Today, it’s a busy place and whether you’re looking for open-air markets or modern department stores, you’ll find it all here.

The surrounding landscape is crisscrossed by oshonas (inland water channels), small farmlands and settlements. In times of heavy rains, the town is prone to flooding.
