Ruacana is located on the Kunene River, the border between Angola and Namibia. The town was developed around an underground hydroelectric plant which was linked to the nearby dam. This was bombed by a Cuban airstrike in 1988 during the Angolan Civil War. The plant was partially repaired and today it is used by Nampower which operates three turbines. Etunda is a community project located near Ruacana which produces maize, wheat, watermelons, bananas and other produce. Half of the 600 hectares is commercially-irrigated farmland and the rest is allocated to small-scale farmers.
Traveller DescriptionRuacana is a small, peaceful settlement offering basic facilities. The Kunene Mini Market at the only fuel station has an ATM and excellent food supplies. They stock frozen meat, fresh
bread, liquor and ice. The town is known for the Ruacana Falls which are located nearby and a must-see after good rains. Tours to the Hydro Electric Power Plant run by Nampower can be arranged.
