The town was established in 1876 on a farm called Visgat. Its name is believed to have been given by a German land surveyor who had taken part in the siege of Paris, and wanted to recreate that famous city on both sides of the Vaal River. Vredefort today is a small town that farms with cattle, peanuts, sorghum, sunflowers and maize. Parys is the only place on earth where you will find pink granite.
