Magaliesburg lies in a beautiful region of mountains, valleys and rivers, 55 km north-west of Johannesburg and is within the Gauteng province of South Africa. The village lies just below the Southern Range of the Magaliesburg Mountains. The remains of the earliest species of primitive man were discovered around the Sterkfontein Caves, about 18 km east of the town. This town is a great tourist destination with a range of accommodation options; hence tourism is one of the major economic boosts in the area. This is because it is a natural beauty. Besides tourism; agriculture also contributes to the towns’ economy with farming of maize and vegetables. Cattle rearing for beef production are also practiced. The growth of this town was also a result of the gold mine, Blaauwbank mine which was discovered over 100 years ago. For more information about the town, travellers can contact the Magalies Local Tourism Office. (May-15)
