Mahikeng is the capital city of the North West Province, and was formerly known as Mafikeng, and historically Mafeking in English. Mafikeng is a Setswana name meaning 'place of stones'. The area was first inhabited by the Khoisan, then the Tswana, and the town itself was founded in the 1880s by British mercenaries.
