This is a peaceful yet modern city. Polokwane means 'Place of Safety', but was previously named Pietersburg. The town was founded in 1886 and named it Pietersburg in honour of Voortrekker leader Petrus Jacobus Joubert, and was also host to a concentration camp during the Anglo-Boer War.

“Polokwane, the capital of South Africa's Limpopo province, has a rich history:
The Voortrekkers, or "Pioneers", established Polokwane in 1886 on land bought from a local farmer. The city was originally named Pietersburg after Boer general Petrus (Piet) Joubert.
During the South African War (1899–1902), Pietersburg was the temporary capital of both the Transvaal and the Orange Free State.
In 2002, the city's name was changed to Polokwane, which means "place of safety" in the Sotho language.
Polokwane officially became a city in 1992 and became the capital of the newly formed Northern Transvaal province in 1994.
Polokwane is a major trade center for the surrounding agricultural area, which produces potatoes, alfalfa, garlic, corn, sorghum, peanuts, and fruits.
The University of Limpopo has a campus in Turfloop, 14 miles east of Polokwane. (Tsidi Mzansi Historian)” -
