Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa, lies just north of Johannesburg in the province of Gauteng. Known for its wide avenues, historic buildings and large number of embassies, the city has a calmer and more spacious feel than its larger neighbour. It is often recognised for its thousands of jacaranda trees, which transform the city into a sea of purple blossoms during spring.

Historical and Cultural Character:

Pretoria developed as an important political centre in the 19th century and remains the seat of South Africa’s national government. The city’s heritage is visible in its stately architecture, monuments and museums that reflect different periods of the country’s history. The prominent Union Buildings, overlooking the city from a hilltop, are one of Pretoria’s most recognisable landmarks and a symbol of the country’s governance.

What Travellers Experience:

Visitors often explore Pretoria through its historic sites, leafy suburbs and cultural attractions. The city offers a number of museums, monuments and public gardens, as well as lively university areas that bring a youthful atmosphere. Cafés, markets and small restaurants contribute to a relaxed urban environment that contrasts with the fast pace of nearby Johannesburg.

Natural Setting:

Pretoria sits in a valley surrounded by low ridges known as the Magaliesberg foothills, giving it a slightly greener and more sheltered environment than much of the surrounding Highveld. Parks, botanical gardens and nature reserves around the city provide opportunities for walking, birdwatching and enjoying views over the urban landscape.

Travel Role:

For travellers, Pretoria is often visited as a cultural and historical complement to Johannesburg, offering insight into South Africa’s political history while providing a quieter city atmosphere and attractive tree-lined streets. It also serves as a convenient stop on routes heading north toward Limpopo and the wildlife areas of the country.

“One of the conditions for the agreement between the Lydenburg and Potchefstroom settlers was that a capital would be built halfway between them. In 1854, a town was started on two farms on the Apies River. In June 1854 the building of the first church was started. It was completed and consecrated in Feb. 1887 A wandering trader, Andries du Toit was appointed as first Landdrost of the area. He purchased a portion of the land from Pretorius (For a Basutho pony) and laid out a town which he named Arcadia. The city that developed here was named Pretoria.” - Chris Smit, 2024/06/13
