The vibrant city of Johannesburg, or also Jozi, Joburg, Joni, eGoli or Joeys, is the business centre of South Africa, and the second biggest city with 3 million business people. Johannesburg's area was first inhabited by the San, then the Bantu-speaking nomads, then Sotho-Tswana communities, then the Ndebele (Matabele) and then the Dutch. Gold was found in 1880 which triggered the gold rush, from which Gauteng grew to become one of the wealthiest provinces in South Africa.

“The Nguni name for Johannesburg is 'IGoli', It means ‘by the gold’.” - Chris Smit, 2024/08/23
“Johannesburg1886 The initial stream of prospectors to the Witwatersrand gold strike settled in Ferreira's camp to the Northwest of the present day Johannesbug. The camp was named after Colonel Ferreira - the leader of the original group of diggers. It was apparent that the camp was only a temporary measure and The ZAR government decided to establish a proper town for the diggers. After a visit by Pres. Paul Kruger, they decided on a site on a Government farm, Randjeslaagte. The place was bleak and windy, not popular at all with the diggers, but there were no complications regarding ownership of the area. The stands were measured up and in November 1988 the new Town was named Johannesburg. The name is a combination of the names of two commissioners, Johann Rissik and Christian Johannes Joubert who had made the recommendation that the area be declared a public Goldfield” - Chris Smit, 2024/06/10
