Piet Retief was founded in 1883 and named after the Voortrekker leader, Piet Retief. In 1886, the 72 inhabitants of the town declared the Klein Vrystaat (Little Free State), and this 'republic' lasted until 1891. Its main economic activities are timber, paper and wattle bark production, mica, kaolin and iron mining.
