Rustenburg is often referred to as the 'Platinum City', due to the two large platinum mines found outside the city. Its name however means 'town of rest', and was founded in 1851 by the Voortrekkers after their defeat of the Matabele warrior, Mzilikazi. Recently, a local tribe known as the Royal Bafokeng have successfully reclaimed land situated on the mineral-rich Merensky Reef, and brought the town the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace. The town's streets are lined with Jacaranda trees.
