Swartruggens (black ridges) previously known as Zwartruggens is located in North West Province, it is a small farming town established in 1875. Located on the Elands River about 69km from Zeerust and 56 km west of the city of Rustenburg. The name 'swartruggens' is derived from the series of hills there.

“The history of Swartruggens Founding: Swartruggens was founded in 1875 on the farm Brakfontein. Supply depot: During the Second Anglo-Boer War, Robert Baden-Powell established a supply depot in Swartruggens. Cemetery: A cemetery for British soldiers who died in the Second Anglo-Boer War is located in Swartruggens. First store: The first store in Swartruggens opened 20 years after the town's founding. Railway station: A railway station was built in Swartruggens in 1907. Diamond discovery: Diamonds were discovered north of Swartruggens in 1932. Mines: A few mines were started in the Swartruggens area and are still in operation today. Name The name "Swartruggens" means "black spines" and refers to the black ridges that surround the town. Location Swartruggens is located in the Bojanala region of the North West Province, near the Elands River. It's situated on the N4 national highway. Activities Swartruggens is a bird watcher's paradise with over 400 species of birds. It also offers hiking trails, quad bike routes, and hunting facilities.
