Malelane

Malelane is a small town in Mpumalanga, South Africa, on the N4, 350 km east of Pretoria. Proclaimed in 1949 it lies in the beautiful, but rather hot, Crocodile Valley, south of the Kruger National Park. The name was derived from either the Swazi word, 'emlalani' which means 'place of the lala palms', or the name of a Swazi tribe which meant 'guardians'. (Of the ford in the Crocodile River, today the Malelane Gate). The farms in the region produce sugarcane, subtropical fruit and winter vegetables. The Sugar Industry, which was established in 1965, had a great impact on the economy of Malelane and from the 1980's it developed rapidly as the sugar mill expanded its activities. The town has a citrus co-operative and fruit juice factory in the industrial area next to the railway line in the northern part of town. The town and surrounds has 2 beautiful golf courses, other sporting facilities and accommodation ranging from good to luxurious. Visitors should take anti-malaria precautions, especially in summer.
