“Komati is a Swazi word meaning ‘river of cows’, (hippos in this case). The town is placed in a natural 'Poort' (Gateway) where the river finds its way through the mountains.” - Chris Smit, 2024/07/06
“Komatipoort lies, on the Western slopes of the Lebombo Mountains which form the border and a natural barrier between South Africa and Mozambique. During the 1880’S Komatipoort started as a construction camp for the railway line being built from Lourenco Marques. The area was extremely hot and malaria fever was a constant danger. During the Anglo/Boer War, the British recruited mercenaries under Lieutenant-Col. Steinaecker, to fight the Boer guerillas in the Lowveld’ These mercenaries became known as "Steinaecker's Horse" and used Komatipoort as a base. Malaria is under control now, but Komatipoort is still one of the hottest places in South Africa, with average summer temperatures of about 33 °C” - Chris Smit, 2024/06/10
