Potgietersrus was established by the Voortrekkers in the 1800's, and named after the leader, Piet Potgieter. The name was changed to Mokopane during 2003, a leader of the Ndebele. Today the area produces wheat, tobacco, cotton, beef, maize, peanuts and citrus, diamonds, platinum and granite.
