Laing's nek aka Langsnek is a pass through the KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg, immediately North of Majuba and 15 Km South of Volksrust. It is a tarred road, presently under much needed repair (June 2011) The pass. Lies at the lowest part of a ridge (elevation 1,800 m) which slopes from Majuba to the Buffalo River. Before the opening of the railway line in 1891 the road over the neck was the main artery between Durban and Pretoria. The railway crosses the pass via a 675 m. long tunnel. On the 28th of January 1881 during the war between the British and the Transvaal Republic, the epic Battle of Laing's Nek was fought here.
