Category: Road Marker :: Entrance Gate

Ossewakop, or “Ox Wagon Hill,” is a prominent feature on the eastern side of Wakkerstroom, a quaint town in Mpumalanga. Rising approximately 400 meters above the town, it is easily recognizable due to the large outline of a Voortrekker wagon and the dates “1838 – 1938” marked with whitewashed rocks near the summit, commemorating the centenary of the Great Trek. The ascent is quite challenging, so it’s important to review the cautionary notes before attempting it. However, the panoramic views from the top make the climb well worth the effort.

Only take on this route if you have a 4-wheel drive vehicle with high clearance. While a low-range gearbox isn’t necessary, having a differential lock is highly recommended. Don’t be misled by the statistics; the path is much steeper and more challenging than it initially seems. Make sure when you attempt this route that you inform someone of where you are going whether your accommodation or family. Make sure you have equipment to change a tyre as well as a spare wheel inflated to the correct pressure.

Then remember when getting to a gate and it is open leave it open but if it is closed then close it after you have passed through.
