The reserve has a variety of habitats an estuarine lagoon with salt marshes which is open to the sea and permanent freshwater lakes, shallow marshes that is flooded in winter, reed beds and a river. Separating it from Table Bay is a strip of coastal dune.

In spring this reserve is birders paradise because of the migrant birds arriving from the northern hemisphere. 180 different bird species such as Pelicans, Flamingos, Ducks, Coots, Herons, Plovers, Weavers and Swallows are listed. The southern water and large seasonal pan can be viewed at the two bird hides that the reserve offers.

Birds are counted four times a year and more than 10 000 birds are counted. Birds like Penguins and Gannets that has been oiled is cleaned by Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) which is adjacent to the reserve. You will also find small mammals in the reserve and seven types of frog's species.

The lagoon is like a nursery to several coastal fish to breed safely such as Elf and Mullet. Dolphins and Whales are visible from the Dunes. The reserve faces many challenges such as pollution and alien plants especially Port Jackson, Rooikrans and Kikuyu grass. People that live nearby can help by preventing oil, fertilizer and poison to enter into the vlei. They can also plant indigenous plants.
