Johannesburg Botanical Gardens have been developed into large, grassy, open spaces scattered with trees, fenced and protected by security at the gates. The gardens contain a mixture of indigenous and exotic trees and are subdivided and named as the main arboretum with a variety of trees and plants in South Africa. Some are named as the Shakespeare Garden, the Rose Garden, the Herb Garden and a Hedge Demonstration Garden. The administration building of the garden is situated at the Botanical Garden Herbarium and Library which contains various books, journals and pamphlets with insight into the different plant species which are part of the garden. There is also the seed room and seed collection and various pressed plant species. The Emmarentia Dam is the main source of water as well as a great place for canoeing and kayaking. The botanical garden is part of the conservation programme of the Johannesburg City parks who can be contacted for more information. (Sept-15)
