Kliprivier Nature Reserve is one of the largest proclaimed nature reserve situated a mere 10km from Johannesburg city centre. The reserve is a wildlife hub and a birding paradise and of significance are the hiking trails which range from easy to difficult. Walking trails are also significant in this area and this reserve has some evidence of the Sotho-Tswana settlers who later abandoned the area around 1750. No entrance fee is payable to enter the reserve. Some archaeological sites exist of the earliest Iron Age settlers The Vierfontein dam lies at the northern end of the reserve at the Mondeor gate and was originally intended to supply the whole of Johannesburg with water in the late 1880s. The guided walks can be specified as being speciality walks when the main focus would be guided walks by specialists in geology, archaeology, botany and history, then braai later on. Open all year round the visitors to the reserve do not pay any entrance fee. The reserve is managed by the Johannesburg City Parks who can be contacted for more information. (Updated May-18).
