Located in South Africa :: Limpopo
Category: Activity :: 4WD-Trail

This 4x4 playground offers an 80km long trail, which would take 10 hours to 2 days to complete. Low range gears are required to complete this trail, the vehicle needs good ground clearance, a guide must accompany drivers, rescue services are available, camping facilities are available, the trail has shade, swimming and there is drinking water available.

Surrounds: Rust de Winter is a 27-ha state-owned property on the banks of the Elands River. It is home to the 4x4 ATV organisation who manage and oversee the trail and its facilities. Part of it is used for the annual Toyota-sponsored Jamboree that has grown to become the biggest gathering of 4x4s in South Africa. One of the beauties of the Rust de Winter set-up is that the guides are experts who have intimate knowledge of this state-owned property, with its bushveld terrain and rocky ravines.

En route: Although mostly not a complicated trail, always pleasantly scenic, there are one or two demanding sections that require expert marshals. There is one very steep and rocky descent that is guaranteed to make your palms sweat - and a similarly steep ascent that requires considerable momentum and will probably demand more than one attempt. The trail runs through the famous Lovers' Lane, which is a water-formed gorge through alluvial rock, covered in evergreen trees. All in all a scenically worthwhile and enjoyable challenge that requires drivers to know their vehicles and have some off-road experience. Expect to spend the weekend, with Friday night spent at base camp and Saturday night on the mountain. One possibility would be to get a group of friends together and has a weekend trail tailored for you.

The participants needs to take their camping gear (tents, sleeping bags) as well as their own recovery gear should something happen on the trail.

Accommodation: The two campsites are simple and rustic. Flush toilets and hot showers are available at the base camp, but the facilities at the overnight mountain camp are very basic.
