Pongola Nature Reserve uPhongolo or Pongola is situated in the foothills of the Lebombo Mountains. In 1874 President Kruger proclaimed the Pongola Game Reserve, the first ever reserve in Africa. The Pongola River runs through the centre of the reserve. The Pongola area has 4 of the Big Five (excluding only Lion) and many game species. Pongolapoort Dam in the Phongolo River, KZN (Sometimes called Jozini dam) is the fifth biggest dams in South Africa. It has a Full Storage Capacity of 2267 million cubic meters and the prime Tiger fishing area in SA, and visitors can do game viewing from the water. The biggest dams (In order of Capacity) in the country are: Gariep, Vanderkloof, Sterkfontein, Vaal, Pongolapoort and Bloemhof Dam.

“Pongola Nature Reserve is in northern KwaZulu-Natal The perennial Pongola River, runs through the reserve before entering the 13 270 hectare Pongola Poort Dam in the Lebombo Mountains.. The reserve is known for tiger fishing, safari cruises, canoeing adventures and birding.. The area has many typical plains game species like impala, zebra and wildebeest. There are Hippo, Crocodile and 4 of the Big Five (excluding Lion). Over 350 species of birds have so far been recorded in the reserve. Visitors can participate in the Elephant tracking program and can track Rhino on foot. The Pongola Nature Reserve is managed by KZN Wildlife, and day visitors are welcome. The dam, also known as Lake Jozini, is one of the best tiger fishing areas in southern Africa The Fish Eagle is a a 21 metre luxury cruise boat with a sun deck, bar, kitchen, braai and toilet, that twice daily, takes visitors on dam cruises.” - Chris Smit, 2009/12/23
