Known as the mv Ilala, built in 1949, the ferry is a 620 tonne passenger vessel operated by the Malawi Lake Services, which has traditionally sailed the full length of Lake Malawi holding a capacity of 400 people on the lower deck and 100 one of cargo up forward, the vessel offers 5 double cabins. There are three classes of service available on the Ilala, a very cramped 3rd class below, an equally crowded 2nd class and 1st class on the top deck. The owner’s cabin has a bathroom en suit, whilst the others have shared bathroom facilities.
The top deck is for passengers, well equipped with a covered bar, while the centre and stern area is open to the elements and allows for spacious sunbathing and recreational area. Every week, the MV Ilala travels the entire length of Lake Malawi providing an unforgettable experience and views of sandy beaches, baobab dominated rocky shores and Likoma Island and up to the mountainous rift escarpments at Nkhata Bay.
Passengers are advised to carry extra cash, as it is required for your ticket and every purchase on board the ferry. There is no place to get cash once your journey has started. Bring some food and water, Do Not rely on the ferry to provide all your needs, If you have limited time, the ferry is not recommended and the ferry only runs once a week in either direction.
