The 7-Eleven concept started in 1927 at the Southland Ice Company, in Dallas, Texas. The name was used to reflect the stores' extended hours. The thriving concept is alive in 27,900 stores operating in the U.S. and 17 other countries, of which South Africa is but one. In 2003, Friendly took over the 7-Eleven chain.
