“Construction of Groote Schuur Hospital commenced in 1932 and was completed in 1936, with the facility officially opening in 1938. Situated on the slopes of Devil’s Peak, the hospital was designed in a neoclassical style featuring Corinthian columns and large windows to enhance ventilation and natural light. It replaced the New Somerset Hospital as the main teaching hospital for the University of Cape Town’s medical faculty. The hospital gained international recognition in 1967 as the site of the world’s first successful human heart transplant. (Origins 22 - Genealogy & History)” - Chris Smit, 2025/05/13
