The name Thaba Bosiu means the 'Mountain at Night'. It was named Thaba Bosiu which means"Mountain at Night" because the Chief and his people arrived there in the evening and the essential protective work took him until late at night. The town is situated in Maseru region of Lesotho, 24km from Maseru town. The majestic mountain top was once a fortress and the centre of political activity and Lesotho's foremost tourist destination holding great historical significance as the birthplace of the Basotho People. Thaba-Bosiu is Lesotho’s great national monument as the evidence of Chief Moshoeshoe and his Basotho people dwelling and villages where a cemetery still remains. Thaba-Bosiu is more of a historical site and not a town, but it still offers many outdoor activities and attractions. For more information visitors can contact the Thaba Bosiu Tourist Information Office.
