The garden at the monument, it is both both historic and beautiful covering a area of 61 hectares of Grahamstown Gunfire Hill. The monument was opened on 13 July 1974, and commemorates the role of the 1820 British settlers. Among the many things they stood for, the following were also their doing: freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of association and promotion of the English language, art, literature, poetry and music.
