Livingstonia Cairn is a National Monument. It was near this spot that Dr Robert Laws and Uriah Shirwa camped and chose to build the Livingstonia Mission Church. The original Livingstonia Mission (named in honour of David Livingstone) was established at Cape Maclear by Lt. ED Young but the high number of malaria fatalities persuaded his successor, Dr. Robert Laws, to relocate to Bandawe in 1881. Malaria proved to be just as prevalent here and eventually Laws decided to move the mission away from the lakeshore.
