The original Livingstonia Mission (named in honour of David Livingstone) was established at Cape Maclear in 1875 but due to the high number of malaria fatalities it was relocated to Bandawe in 1881. However, Malaria proved to be just as prevalent here and eventually Dr. Robert Laws decided to move the mission away from the lakeshore. The mission was then established at Livingstonia in 1894.
