Chongoni Rock Art is a world heritage site situated on a 12,640 ha within a cluster of forested granite hills. It is a collection of 127 sites in the Dedza district of Malawi featuring rock paintings which date back to the Stone Age. These are scarce tradition of farmer rock art, as well as paintings by Batwa hunter-gatherers who inhabited the area from the late Stone Age. Most of the symbols in this area are associated with women associated with Chewa cultural relevance thereby representing cultural history and traditions of the peoples of the Malawi plateau.
Some of the symbols depicts initiation ceremonies and ritual practices. For more information about this area visitors can contact the Dedza District Council as the Dedza Information Centre is set to open soon where more information would be available for all the visitors. Visitors can also contact the offices of the Department of Antiquities, Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Culture.
