Village Pinetown

Pinetown, located about 20 km northwest of Durban, began as a settlement in 1848 on the Salt River Poort farm. It was officially declared a township in 1942. The town was named in honor of Sir Benjamin Pine, who served as the Lieutenant-Governor of Natal from 1849 to 1856.
