“Germiston During the Gold rush of the 1880’s, John Jack, a Scottish trader from Lake Chrissie, found traces of gold on the farm Elandsfontein on the East Rand. He took an option on the farm and formed a partnership with his trading partner from Lake Chrissie, August Simmer. The Simmer and Jack Gold Mining Co. was thus formed and commenced mining operations in the area. To house the workers, a town was laid out in May1887 on the farm Elandsfontein. John Jack named the new town, Germiston, in memory of the farm near Glascow, where he had been born.” - Chris Smit, 2024/06/13
