There is the Barberton-Makhonjwa Geotrail was developed as a means of making the fascinating secrets of these mountains accessible to and easily understood by the public. Along with their exceptional geology, the area is rich in wild plants, animals and beautiful scenery. The site reflects a striking representation of when continents first began to form on primitive earth and is a prime example of the ongoing process of ecological and biological evolution of plants and animals. The geotrail is approximately 37km self-drive trail that begins in the town of Barberton and takes you up a steep and winding tarred road to where it ends just before the Bulembu Border Gate (Swaziland). “Makhonjwa Mountains. Barberton lies on the Northern slope of the Makhonjwa Mountain range, which dates back to a time before the Precambrian period. The Precambrian is a time that marks the beginning of the earth’s history to the formation of early life-forms. This makes the Makhonjwa Mountain range, which is 3.5 billion years old, one of the most ancient rock formations on Earth. Despite the decades of gold mining that took place there, this age-old mountain range has remained intact and probably still contains large quantities of unfound gold..” - Chris Smit, 2024/05/24
